As the only person with any experience in the kitchen amongst an apartment with 4 roommates, my job as the house chef comes as both a pleasure and a challenge. We’re poor artists and college students from all different walks of life, so it is important to fill our stomachs without emptying pockets. I’m a food lover and restaurant enthusiast, so for me it is essential that my food is not only good, but that the experience is memorable.
Growing up with a Buffalo native as a mother, it comes as no surprise that one of my favorite dishes is buffalo wings. Time and time again I try to teach my roommates how to create my edible masterpiece but it goes nowhere. Last night, the game changed when I broke out my bottle of BLiS BLAST hot sauce and whipped up some wings.
It all starts with evenly spreading out the raw wings on greased baking sheets. Laying out raw chicken may seem like a simple task but somehow my roommates always manage to lose half the chicken to our dog. This is usually the point I thank them for their enthusiasm and agree to take on dinner myself. I then put chicken in a 400F oven for about 45 minutes, flipping it once, until the wings are cooked and golden to perfection. Then I toss the baked wings in a combination of my BLAST hot sauce, melted butter and a little minced garlic.
When the scent of spicy, mouth-watering wings fills our crazy little apartment, all my roommates begin to suddenly become some of the most helpful and efficient people in the world. Within seconds blue cheese is poured out, and paper towels are ready to go. I like to serve my wings with a healthy portion of maple-roasted sweet potatoes and fresh rolls, both of which are low cost but yield beautiful results. There is nothing like making your friends happy by making them food you love. And despite the time and sweat that goes into it, it’s a rewarding process every time.
